First Stop: KC Convoy of Hope

Saturday, June 16, 2012 was a beautiful picture of the church being the church in Kansas City, Missouri. Convoy of Hope partnered with over 60 churches and para-church community organizations for an incredible day and the Convoy of Hope interns got to be a part.  Do you know what happens when the church acts like the true body of Christ?  We do!

Friday night we met for a prayer and pep rally, over 1,000 volunteers attended. Saturday we hit Swope Park before the sun came up.  The first guest was in line at 4:30am, Why?  She told the volunteer she was greeted by, "I need help and I'm hoping to find it here today."

Our outreach director Darwin Boston took the stage where over 2,000 volunteers were gathered.  He began to read off the areas where help was needed.  I watched my new group of interns wondering what they would volunteer for.  The first announcement was, "We need help in the shoe tent, you'll wash the feet of the guests and then put their brand new pair of shoes on them!" I have to admit I was surprised when half a dozen of my girls squealed in glee at this opportunity. Here's a cool story from one in that group, — Convoy of Hope .

Next a handful volunteered to bag and distribute a few thousand bags of groceries. A couple went to work in the Salon tent, where you could get your hair cut, nails done, or a much needed massage, all services were done by professionals of course!  The interns went to meet and greet guests and pass out the gift bags of salon items that had been donated! A few interns chose to be gophers, security, and a ton of them chose to spend their day in the prayer tent praying with any guest that desired prayer. I watched a few of the interns hang in the volunteer rally and pass up opportunities to work in the medical tent, the dental tent, the breast cancer foundation tent, the kids area, the food tent, one finally went to the family portrait tent, and one even went to be part of the beautification team (trash-picker-upper!) Then there were two, so I approached the slackers and said, "What are you waiting for?" They said, "We want to work in the "When-I-Grow-Up" tent!" Inquisitively I looked at them and said, "Tha what tent?!" (I kind of thought they had made that up!)

The "When I Grow Up" tent is new & stinking cool!  The kids come up with mom and dad and are asked, "what do you want to be when you grow up?" and everything from Dr., Lawyer, to flying Ninja comes up! Their very first resume' is created and then they are ushered into the costume tent where they can dress up as a Dr., ninja, UPS man, businessman, a fire fighter, etc., their photo is taken and then mom and dad get the printed out copy and resume to put up at home! It's so cool!

People were going home with all kinds of loot, new shoes, new hair cuts, cool shower heads, light bulbs, resumes, jobs, hot dogs, snow cones, Paul Mitchell products, & I don't even know what else, but I was half tempted to turn my volunteer shirt inside out and go through the line! I had to be mobile in case an intern fell and broke their leg or something dumb like that so, I checked out the entertainment stage & chatted with the guests.

Everyone was having a great time, well almost everyone.  Two little 7 year old boys sat down in front of me & crossed their arms grumpily.  I tapped one on the shoulder and said, "Are you having a good time?"  He replied, "No! I'm ready to go home!" I countered with, "Did you go to the kid's zone? There are bounce houses, pony rides, & all kinds of cool stuff!" He scowled, "My grandmama said she don't wanna take us!" Embarrassed I said, "Oh, I'm sorry." I finally got up the nerve to ask grandmama if I could take the boys over to the kid's zone! She didn't hesitate to send them away with me! So for the next two hours, I had Nate & Jayvon, and stood in every hot line there was in the kid's zone! Nate even took his first pony ride! (Inner City KC doesn't have much of a cowboy scene so he was pretty excited!) At one point as we were crossing from one ride to the next, he put his hand on my back and looked up at me with the biggest smile. Needless to say, my day was made!

What happens when the church acts like the church? Little kids smile & grandmama gets a much need break, 4,696 people receive prayer for their many needs.  50 people accept Christ for the first time, 600 families get a family portrait for free, 500 people get free hair cuts, 478 women receive breast exams and education, 700 people get to go home with brand new shoes, 200 get free manicures and massages, 109 get resumes, 450 get new jobs! A guy who gets released from prison in the morning, gets some new outfits, one specifically for his job interviews, a resume, a new haircut, and some much needed prayer.  Most of all, over 10,000 people get renewed HOPE!

In The Beginning: Summer 2012

Well, the interns arrived Thursday night at 6pm and boy, are there are a lot of them! It's crazy that we start off as strangers and in 6weeks we will not remember a time when we did not know each other. Night #1 started off with Chinese food of course, followed by a worship service to commission our team!

Friday morning came early!  Maybe a little too early for me, I've had a stick shift car for over six years now.  I got into it Friday morning and it just wouldn't start! For a full minute I was bewildered, till I realized I was not pushing in the clutch!?  What in the world?  Tired already?  Utho!

I had to wake up quick because I was the opening session. I talked to them out of John 21 about Naked Fishing and Going Overboard. We learned some valuable lessons from Peter here about how to live life especially during the internship.  Go overboard, dive in, get to Jesus as fast and as quickly as you possibly can! It was good stuff.  Unfortunately when my boss came in and asked them what they had learned they said, "About getting naked and that Mary Beth believes she is God's favorite!" Opps!

Afterwards, we signed a covenant committing to follow hard after Jesus the next 6 weeks and to represent Him well everywhere we go because #WeGo for sure!

Then we added the Spring 2012 team to the wall! (I miss those guys!) We prayed over them and the great things they are doing for God. Then we loaded up and headed to KC & checked into The Westin Crown Center! Thanks to one of my former KC students, "Bob" whose real name is Dustin Crowl who hooked us up with a SWEET discount! Love that guy!

Running is Stupid

Am I the only one who gets annoyed at all the marathon-ers on my FB timeline?!

"I ran 16 miles in 4 minutes, it was rough, but it feels so good!" "Only took in 7 miles before work this morning, maybe tomorrow will be better!" Gag!

Oh and did I mention I live by the Missouri State University campus?  Sports bras, running shorts, chatting it up with their running partner, smiling and laughing, and not a bead of sweat?! (Insert eye rolling and head shaking here!)

I've thought about linking MY Couch to 5K app to Facebook just to make all you NON- marathoners feel better! Like today, where it says, "You just ran 1 mile in 18.26 minutes! Or I could tell you how I got up at 6am yesterday to run and fell asleep while doing my stretches so I went back to bed in my new tennis shoes!  Speaking of which; are they not so cool!?

IF there IS a perk to running, it's the new kicks! Syncing my app to FB would not do it justice, I mean if you really want to feel good about yourself you should come watch me in action, I make running look as excruciatingly and ridiculously hard as is it really is!! And no worries, my attire is baggy pants, big t-shirt, and of course my new shoes and lots and lots of sweat! The event comes with plenty of GREAT facial expressions, stopping because my head phones fell out of my ear yet again, and a near toddler like tantrum when the app lady in my ear says "Okay, now Jog!"

Speaking of my app lady, her name is "Constance" and I'm torn because I know it's wrong to hate, (well, actually I'm not sure, I always hear my mama say, under her breath, of course, "Oh Lord, is it wrong to hate?!" This typically takes place when she's on the phone with the automated AVON line, after she's seen how bad I beat her at Scramble, or most often after she's exited my Dad's office!) But, I never really hear an answer from the Lord after she says it, but I'm fairly confident that it IS wrong to hate, so my question is, is it wrong to hate Constance? I mean technically she's just a voice on my app right? But she's a real human somewhere too, right?! Soooo... do I repent for hating Constance or can I keep on hating?  The moral dilemmas in my life just get harder and harder everyday!

Oh and today, I chose to listen to Ricardo Sanchez as I "ran." (You should get his stuff, he's a cool guy we worked on the same staff together for about a minute and a half in Kansas City and he's a great worship leader!) The first song was Moving Forward and well that's good stuff to "run" to, encouraging and the like.  However, towards the end of my "run" (which I'm SURE Constance doubled today)"It's not Over" started playing which says, "It's not over, It's not finished, It's not ending!" Ricardo! Are you kidding me!?! I'll make sure THAT never happens again, but at least I got in a good cry this morning before the interns arrived!

Last but not least, at the end of your work out you're supposed to log how you feel and you get these faces to choose from?  None of them quite express how I REALLY feel when I'm done so I make my own, here's today's!
